FAQ
Are Your Trainers Certified?
In New Zealand, the dog training industry is unregulated, meaning there are no formal qualifications or licensing requirements. However, as I want only the best for Urban Paws clients, I have chosen to invest in the best education available, seeking out world-class mentors and programs that emphasise both science and practical application. My goal is to deliver results that are grounded, ethical, and tailored to the unique needs of each dog and their family.
-

Ongoing Professional Development
I’ve attended seminars and workshops across Australia, the UK, and online, learning directly from some of the world’s leading trainers, including Pat Stuart, Michael Ellis, and Jay Jack. These experiences have shaped my balanced, thoughtful approach to working with dogs of all breeds and behavioral backgrounds.
What will my dog learn in training with Urban Paws Dog Training?
All of our training programs are custom designed and built to suit you and your dog. We work with you to reach your dog training goals. If you want to work on your obedience – we’ve got you covered. Behavioural challenges – we will devise a plan to support you and overcome these together. Whether you are looking for a helping hand with leash manners, real-world socialisation or just want to learn a new skill or hobby that you can share with your dog, Urban Paws can help. Each program is customised to suit the needs of your dog and your lifestyle so that you are not left feeling overwhelmed.
My dog doesn’t like other dogs. Can they still train with Urban Paws?
Absolutely! We pride ourselves on this.
We offer private training sessions which are tailored specifically to your dogs needs and at your dog’s pace in a safe, controlled environment.
Whether your dog is simply uncomfortable around other dogs or displays more intense reactivity, we’ll meet you where you’re at. While reactivity can be very complex and may take time to work through, we’ll create a custom behaviour and management plan that fits your lifestyle and goals.
Our aim is to help you feel calm, confident, and in control, so you and your dog can enjoy walks, outings, and everyday life together with less stress.
Ask us about our doggy enrichment activities where we can teach you and your dog to track or play, ensuring that your dogs genetics are met without needing to worry about possible conflict with other dogs.
What vaccinations does my dog need?
Vaccination Policy
At Urban Paws, we’re committed to providing a safe and healthy training environment for every dog. To reduce the risk of contagious disease, we require all dogs attending group sessions to be up to date with their vaccinations.
For private sessions and in-home visits, vaccinations are at the owner’s discretion with the exception of puppy socialisation, which has specific requirements outlined below.
Puppy Vaccination Requirements
-
Puppies must have had at least their second round of vaccinations (typically around 10–12 weeks old) before attending any puppy classes or socialisation sessions outside the home.
-
For group training, puppies should have completed their third vaccination round (usually around 14–16 weeks old).
-
For private puppy lessons in your home, no vaccinations are required.
Adult Dog Requirements (for group sessions)
To attend any group-based training, dogs must be current with:
-
DHPP/DHP/DHLPP Core Vaccine
Protects against Distemper, Hepatitis (Adenovirus), and Parvovirus. -
Kennel Cough (Bordetella bronchiseptica)
Must have been administered within the past 6 to 12 months.
Can you work on a specific issue with my dog?
Yes, absolutely. We are trained in behaviour modification and take a holistic, science-based approach to every case considering your dog’s genetics, neurobiology, and ethology (natural canine behaviour) to understand the root cause of the issue and develop a tailored training plan.
Whether it’s reactivity, fear, resource guarding, separation anxiety, or another behaviour challenge, we aim to support both you and your dog with practical, compassionate guidance.
If we ever come across a case that falls outside our expertise, we won’t leave you hanging, we’ll refer you to a trusted specialist within our expansive professional network. With Urban Paws, your dog is always in safe, experienced hands.
What age should my dog start training?
Training can begin as early as 8 weeks old, though at this stage we’d focus on toileting, crate training and puppy socialisation.
It’s never too early (or too late) to start building good habits and strengthening your bond with your dog.
Do you work with reactive dogs or dogs who lunge and bark at bikes and cars?
Yes, we do. At Urban Paws, we regularly work with reactive dogs, including those who lunge, bark, or become overstimulated around bikes, cars, or other moving triggers.
Rather than just managing the symptoms, we focus on addressing the underlying cause of the behaviour. Whether it’s fear or frustration. Through a structured, science-based approach, we help your dog build new associations and develop more appropriate responses, so you can enjoy calmer, more confident walks together.
How long does training take?
Can the whole family be involved in training?
Absolutely! We encourage everyone in the household to participate. Training is most successful when it’s consistent and fun for both dogs and humans.
What breeds do you train?
All breeds are welcome at Urban Paws. We recognise that genetics influence behaviour, so we adapt our training to each dog’s natural drives and personality.
